Highlights on the housing program...
- Overall, Vermont CARES provides support at more than 21 units of housing across the state, eleven of which share one building with periodic house meetings, meals and social opportunities
- We recognize housing is critical for managing HIV disease -- for continuing to take medication, for eating to maintain health and for general well-being
- This housing is designed to house homeless people with HIV/AIDS, or those at risk of homelessness. Therefore, people who are homeless, couch-surfing or otherwise not permanently housed generally are a priority on our housing waiting list.
- Our Services Director and Housing Program Manager maintain a waiting list; please contact them well in advance to discuss housing options. We do not recommend moving to Vermont without a housing plan, since the waiting list nearly always has a wait of at least 1 to 3 months.
- Additionally, Vermont CARES provides access to housing vouchers (similar to Section 8 vouchers) for housing an additional 30 families affected by HIV/AIDS.
- Living in one of these housing units is a specific program at CARES with specific requests for maintaining that tenancy. In other words, we ask that you meet with your case manager at least monthly to gauge your housing needs, health and other factors. Specific income limits are set by the U.S. government and must be met to ensure continued housing.
